I feel like basics make or break a wardrobe. What do I mean? Well, basics build an outfit; they allow you to pair other ready to wear items with them. So basic pieces include tees with stripes, white tee, black jeans, midi coat, loafers etc. But, sometimes I find basics hard to style, especially in this extremely interchangeable London weather!
Honestly, you can never have enough basic staples in your wardrobe. Do you own any basic items? If so, find out how I style an absolute staple. If not, then click to get ideas about basics, like this striped tee I style!
What is a basic?
Without getting into the English side of things, the dictionary quotes that a basic is: “forming an essential foundation or starting point; fundamental.” So, a basic is the starting point for every outfit (in fashion terms!). What I love about these items, is that there is no limit to how many you can own! You can own 7 white tees and that is completely fine- they are the starting point for an outfit.
Where is the best place to buy basics?
In my opinion, there is no “BEST” place to buy anything. Sure, certain shops do certain pieces better than others. But, that doesn’t mean to say that it is the PERFECT shop for everything.
Recently, I have been loving Scandinavian brands. & Other Stories, H&M, Wood Wood, Acne Studios and Eytys are all great examples of brands that sell good essentials. Obviously, some prices vary, however, the minimalist style enforces the point that BASICS are essential for any wardrobe!
What are some of your favourite basics?
Like I mentioned above, brands like & Other Stories produce high quality pieces that can be worn in so many ways. Below I have featured some of my favourite pieces from Scandinavian brands I love:
- Satin strappy top from H&M
2. Striped long sleeve top from H&M
3. Grey cashmere coat from Acne Studios
4. Grey suede sneakers from Eytys
5. Straight leg jeans in light wash from & Other Stories
How can you style a basic?
Below, I feature photographs of how I style my H&M striped top. I paired this basic tee with a pair of vintage Petrolio jean shorts (find similar here). My Eugenia Kim baker boy hat and my mini Zac by Zac Posen bag (find similar here).
